Hypnosis FAQs

Q. Who can use Hypnosis?

A.  Virtually everyone can experience hypnosis to some level.   Some applications, such as pain control benefit from deeper levels of hypnotic trance, but most objective need only a light to moderate level of absorption by hypnosis to benefit significantly.   There are a small number of people who lack the ability to focus for even brief periods that may not be able to experience the hypnotic state.

 Q.  What can hypnosis accomplish or do?

A.  A great deal of control over one’s own physiology is possible.Hypnotic suggestion can control blood flow, change stomach acid levels, eliminate pain, cure warts, improve other skin conditions, and a host of other positive effects.  Emotionally, hypnosis can help improve mood, optimism,  physical activity, and thought patterns.

Hypnosis cannot turn an average golfer into a Tiger Woods, or make a person with an average memory have a photographic mind.   There are many things hypnosis can do, but drastically changing reality is a stretch.

Q.  Do hypnosis benefits last?

A.  A powerful part of hypnosis are the post-hypnotic suggestions and response cues.  This extends the new patterns to occur in everyday life.   Additionally, having an audio version of the hypnosis for reinforcement is very helpful.  Dr. Lambrou provides his clients with a recording of the hypnosis session to reinforce the post-hypnotic effect.  Such post-hypnotic suggestions can therefore, last indefinitely.

 Q.  What does hypnosis feel like?

A.   Most people feel deeply relaxed.  The subjective experience of each person can be different.  Many people allow their conscious mind to drift off into an unrelated thought or image while the subconscious mind tracks with the hypnotic language.   Other people, especially in the beginning seem to watch the entire experience as if an observer, monitoring the events and even thinking about the suggestions for a time.  There are many ways it may be felt, but most often there is some feeling disconnection from one’s body, time, and orientation to the room, or even drastic shifts in perceptions in line with the suggestions.

 Q.  Will a person hypnotized be able to choose to ignore a suggestion?

A.   A person in hypnosis is always able to stop the trance, ignore a suggestion that is counter to their beliefs or intentions.  However, never let yourself be hypnotized by some you may not trust.’

Q.  How does hypnosis work?

A.  There is still some aspects of the hypnotic phenomenon that are not clearly understood and how it works is one of them.  One view commonly held by experts is that hypnosis creates a state of mental focus where the conscious judgmental part of us is slightly diverted or set aside so that suggestions consistent with our best intentions and goals may be put into the subconscious more directly and without filtering through beliefs that interfere with their acceptance.   In another view, in hypnosis we are able to communicate within more directly with our subconscious as well as our physiological processes and create change at a deeper level.

Energy Psychology

Energy Psychology (EP)  refers to an innovated approach to resolving emotional distress using a combination of structured breathing, physical cueing of the body and mind while focused on the distress using cognitive focus, self-applied acupressure to reprogram the mind/body to releasing the distress.  Dr. Lambrou and his colleagues have conducted and had published, pilot clinical studies that demonstrated specific and measurable changes in physiology and subjective distress using a version of EP called Emotional Self-Management.  To view the summary of this published study (CLICK HERE).  This method is detailed in his award-winning book, Instant Emotional Healing: Acupressure for the Emotions

While these methods are still considered experimental, they have been found to be
very effective in clinical practice and when combined with conventional therapies
they can frequently speed the relief and resolution of trauma, anxiety, fears, and
other distress.  Dr. Lambrou demonstrates the method on several TV interview
appearances that can be viewed on the home page of this site.
